Nokia hopes design of Windows Phone will help it regain market share - The Seattle Times

Speaking of Nokia (see post below), The Wall Street Journal ran an interesting story Tuesday about how the Finnish phonemaker is hoping its innovative design of new phones - including those using Microsoft's Windows Phone platform - will help it regain market share.

Nokia is expected to launch its first Windows Phone 7.5 (codenamed "Mango," the update to the current Windows Phone 7) sometime this fall.

"Anyone interested in the look and feel of Nokia's future handset design should examine the N9 launched in June," according to the Journal's article, which requires a subscription to access. "It is made from a colorful polycarbonate material and although it appears rectangular, it has a curved glass screen."

In the article, Nokia's head designer Marko Ahtisaari says the N9's design is an indication of where the company is headed. "We will drive this trend toward reduction and more natural forms," he said. Ahtisaari also indicated he'd like to find ways for people to keep their heads up and be able to maintain more eye contact even while using their phones.

Nokia's share of the smartphone market has fallen recently, putting it in third place behind Apple and Samsung, the Journal said.

Ahtisaari is the first head designer at Nokia to report directly to the company's chief executive, Stephen Elop, former president of Microsoft's Business division.
